About the Training

1

Across this carefully co-designed training, participants will embark on a structured yet deeply reflective journey through a comprehensive content. Each session has been intentionally crafted to build upon the last, ensuring that knowledge is not only acquired but also meaningfully integrated into practice. The overarching aim is to both deepen professional expertise and cultivate a supportive, thriving community of neurodivergent and neurodivergent-affirming therapists.

The course begins with a thorough introduction to the Neurodivergent Competency Framework—a structure that sets out the principles, values, and practical skills required for genuinely affirming therapeutic practice. Participants will examine the framework in detail, learning how it can serve as both a mirror (to reflect on current practice) and a map (to guide future growth). By engaging with this tool, attendees will begin to see how everyday practice can either reinforce or dismantle barriers faced by neurodivergent clients.

2

A central thread running through the curriculum is an exploration of the historical paradigms of neurodivergence. Participants will critically examine how medicalised, deficit-focused models have shaped cultural attitudes, professional practices, and lived experiences across generations. The course will invite participants to interrogate prevailing narratives—asking who benefits from these stories, whose voices have been excluded, and what alternative narratives might better honour neurodivergent lives. These reflections are not purely theoretical: they provide the groundwork for reimagining therapeutic encounters in ways that are more liberatory, inclusive, and responsive to the real needs of neurodivergent communities.

3

The course then moves into in-depth explorations of Autism and broader Neurodivergent Theory, situating both within a rich tapestry of research, lived experience, and social context. Sessions will challenge widespread myths and misconceptions—such as assumptions about empathy, communication, or functionality—while foregrounding the diverse realities of neurodivergent individuals across the lifespan. These discussions will highlight not just challenges but also strengths, innovations, and contributions of neurodivergent people.

4

Crucially, intersectionality will be woven throughout the programme as both a theme and a practice. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on how neurodivergence intersects with race, culture, gender identity, sexuality, socioeconomic status, disability, and migration status, among others. These reflections will help practitioners understand the compounded barriers faced by individuals at multiple axes of marginalisation, while also highlighting areas of resilience, solidarity, and community care.

5

The training also highlights innovative, community-led models of health and social care. These models—developed by neurodivergent academics and community advocates—offer compelling alternatives to traditional service delivery. They prioritise co-production, lived experience leadership, and systemic change, challenging participants to consider how such models might be adapted or applied within their own practice settings.

6

More than just a transfer of knowledge, this training is designed as a transformative experience. Each session blends theory with practical application, ensuring participants are not passive recipients of information but active co-creators of insight. Through structured reflective exercises and guided discussions, attendees will be supported in adapting their own therapeutic models to become more inclusive, equitable, and effective. Practical strategies—ranging from adjustments in communication and environment to broader systemic advocacy—will be introduced and practiced, empowering participants to make tangible changes in their professional context

7

By the conclusion of the training, participants will not only have acquired advanced knowledge of neurodivergent theory, frameworks, and best practice but will also have cultivated the confidence and critical awareness needed to champion neurodivergent inclusion in their respective field

8

Ultimately, this training is not only about informing practice—it is about reshaping practice. It calls on practitioners to step into a role as allies, advocates, and agents of change, ensuring that neurodivergent voices and experiences are not only heard but centred. By the end of the journey, participants will be prepared to integrate these insights into their work, their organisations, and their professional communities—contributing to a future where therapeutic spaces are genuinely affirming, accessible, and transformative for all.

Feedback

"As a neurodivergent psychotherapist, I enrolled in the 'Think Neurodivergent' course to earn a certification for working with neurodivergent clients. What I experienced was truly transformative. For the first time in a learning environment, I felt genuinely at ease, a significant milestone given my history of educational trauma as a dyslexic ADHD individual. Emma created a space where it was okay to not have all the answers, providing a learning experience that was both supportive and empowering. Her passion and authenticity shone through, making the course an unforgettable journey. Crena Watson "

" Emma is an extremely engaging, extremely knowledgeable and affable trainer"

"The Think ND course was brilliant! I already had some understanding about neurodivergence both professionally and personally but this course really deepened my knowledge and provided a framework for approaching client work. As an AuDHD therapist, this was the first training I have done where I felt completely at ease and comfortable to be myself and learn in my own way- Emma's facilitation really encouraged this, and her knowledge is second to none."
